Hackers destroy things on a daily basis. They get thrills out of ruining the operations of technology for other people, they thrive on the challenge of destorying what others have made, to them its usually a game. Visit the following website. http://news.yahoo.com/security/ Read the article I assigned to you then write a brief summary of the article. We will get in groups to discuss the articles then share the higlights with the class.
***If you are not present in class please chose an article, write a detailed summary, then comment on another post from one of your classmates.
Enjoy the long weekend!!!
It's amazing how people can find a way to get into companies files. It's not nice to do, but it is facinating on what hackers can do. They can change bank account numbers and get money, steal files from companies, or like Miller's hack, access peoples phones and get everything off of it. Now that I read this, I am weary of what I put on my Ipod because of it. It makes me wonder now that Steve is gone, if Apple will crash or not
ReplyDelete"Duqu Virus Tied to Microsoft Windows Bug"
ReplyDeleteDuqu is a virus that uses a security flaw in Microsoft's Windows system to infect computers with this virus. It was discovered in October, it is thought to be the next big cyber secuirty threat. It has some of the same codes as Stuxnet, which is the owmr that infected Iran's nuclear program. But this Duqu virus is specifically designed to gather information from agencies and corporations. THe virus infects your computer through a compormised WOrd document that installs the malicious software after it is opened. thsi virus has been confirmed in several countries including FRance, Netherlands, Switzerland, India, Iran, Ukrane, Sudan and Vietnam.
This article elaborates on the current problem of computer hacking. It looks back on the stuxnet worm virus that tried to tamper with the computers that controlled Irans nuclear program. It also speaks of Americas top viral protection programs forwarning of a virus by the name of Duqu that's gunning for industrial controll systems in the future.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the statement "to them its usually a game." Is completely wrong.
ReplyDeleteTo most hackers its not a game.
Not a game at all.
Hacking is for the most part, a money making venture, people will, and do pay for hacked accounts and the advertisement value.
Account and IP addresses as well as emails are used to advertise and generate site visits making the hacker "or modern day con artist" a great deal of money.
There is also the value of hacked accounts, hacking a site such as netflix, or often porn sites generates a large revenue from reselling them, as legit accounts, or at a discounted prices to buyers who dont care where they came from.
The other type of hacking that takes a very large place in the hacking world is hacktivists. Though this is a seemingly new term that has really been brought to light in recent years by groups such as "anonymous" The have been around for quite a while, they hack sites to make a point, to stop an action, or to support another group.
Hacking for fun, for the game does make a up a part of the hacking world, but a very small part. When hacking first started it was more or less for the challenge, and though this does take place today still. Our world is so integrated into the internet and our computers that there is much more opportunity to make money.
1.)
The apple store hack, or so its called.
This hack is made possible by a short cut ran in the iphone to make webbrowsing faster.
Though a basic exploit that uses javascript and app (That still would have to be approved by apple, though the hackers was) Can run in the iphone and allow a computer to have remote access to the iphone. Taking a limited look at its content. Though this is a limited hack, and a less then worthwhile hack for anyone other then creepers, it does showcase flaws in the iOS. This will be quickly patched im sure and never exploited by a devious minded hacker.
This hack was thankfully brought to light by a white hat hacker. It will be quickly fixed and never thought of again.
The hacks to worry about our the ones we never hear about.
The article I read about had to deal with Palestinians internet service being attacked. The article talked about the IP address's being exposed, and one of the names mentioned believed it was organized by a state. They are in the process of trying to fix the problem. With the internet service being attacked the users cannot view foreign websites. Between being slow and stopping, they are trying to figure out this issue.
ReplyDeleteHackers are constantly finding ways to get in your computer. Int he article I read they were claiming to be a different group that had interesting pictures. The group they were claiming to be was the only one with these pictures. When you opened up the "pictures" they got access to your computer. Hackers are frequently using this technique with new news articles to get access to your computer. Boom roasted.
ReplyDeleteRemember when we read that article about a worm that had infiltrated Iran's nuclear facilities? Apparently there's a similar worm wreaking havoc.
ReplyDeleteUS Security firm Symantec has reported that this virus is attempting to gather information from industrial firms. The worm is referred to as 'Duqu' as it places a DQ before all files that it corrupts.
"Duqu's purpose is to gather intelligence data and assets from entities, such as industrial control system manufacturers, in order to more easily conduct a future attack against another third party.
"The attackers are looking for information such as design documents that could help them mount a future attack on an industrial control facility."
It doesn't sound like this is anything aiming to corrupt personal computer users, but it could have a greater affect on the country as a whole if there's corporate and industrial corruption happening.
My article was about hackers threatening Fox News.com they are threatening to shut down their website because they are "right wing". It is so uncalled for and ridiculous, if they thought about it at all they would realized that everyone has their own opinions about everything. If everyone shut down websites they didn't agree with we probably wouldn't have any. I think these hackers are extremely immature and need to find a better way to utilize their skills. I don't follow politics or news unless it is something really big. I don't know or care which sites are "right wing" and I know there are things out there that I don't agree with but I ignore them. Hackers that cause destruction really irritate me. I know its about the challenge but I will never understand how they can feel right about themselves after ruining something that someone else created or someones computer.
ReplyDeleteMy article was Duqu hackers shift to Belgium after India raid. This article was confusing it was about hackers using servers of a company. To lay the groundwork for attacks using a virus with some of the same code as Stuxnet. Duqu was used for setting groundwork for more attacks on the oil refineries and power plants and other important plants that can be taken over by a computer hacker. This will cause a lot of damage to the infrastructure and destroy some important data the companies may have plus it can give the hackers a lot of power.
ReplyDeleteBasically....a server in India was infected with the virus Duqu and was being controlled by hackers in Belgium. They believe the hackers designed the virus to affect critical infrastructure such as power plants, oil refineries and pipelines.
ReplyDeleteOnce the company (Combell Group) was alerted to "fishy" communications, the server was shut down immediately. Whoever was controlling the server was intentially deleting data so that they would not leave any traces.
Governments and security experts worldwide are trying to decode the virus. Some believe this could be the next big cyber threat after the Stuxnet virus that was believed to have infected Iran's nuclear program.
The article was about a guy in China that is sending out the Nitro Virus to top chemical firms in the US. He is sending emails to employees saying their antivirus software needs to be updated, they click on it, and it releases the spy software so they can get the information. Nitro is used to steal the companies' intellectual property for competitive advantage. At least 48 companies information are at risk. Another one going around chemical firms was the Poison Ivy virus..and it basically does the same thing as Nitro.
ReplyDeletehttp://news.yahoo.com/exclusive-national-security-agency-helps-u-banks-battle-155051689.html;
ReplyDeleteThe NSA is now helping national banks with their security systems. Some small breaches have occurred that they are blaming China for, but nothing major has happened yet. They are preparing for the worst case scenario though in protecting data from being destroyed and passwords stolen. but they say they can only do so much and eventually if a hacker wants to breach the system they will have no way of defending against it.
Hackers Take Down Palestinian Servers
ReplyDeletePalestinian Communications Minister announced on Tuesday afternoon that hackers from all over the world had hacked their servers cutting Internet Service acroos the West Bank and Gaza. The sites were attacked by hackers using organized mirror servers. Looking at the way their servers were attacked and at the intensity there were attacked by, the Communication Minister believes there is a purpose to the attack and its's not spontanious. The incident occured the day after Palestinians won full membership of UNESCO. There is talk that Israel could be involved
Kira Lake
In the article I read, "NSA helps banks battle hackers", they explained how people hack into trading systems for stocks, bonds and money. It also talks about how other countries could hack account and steal data that in the long run could end up ruining the country completely. I feel that people that who hack bank/email accounts just to do this to gain more power, because in the end they are the ones controlling what goes on in that account. I feel this article is trying to come up with different ways for making it harder for hackers to get information. One example was turning all ATM's off which doesn't seem realistic because people use them everyday, but that also shows how easy it is to hack someones account. The person just has to look over your shoulder to get your pin number or you may forget to sign out which gives them access to all your information.
ReplyDeleteIn the article I chose to read it was talking about Charlie Miller and how he was able to find a flaw in one of apple's firmware upgrades. Charlie being a "white-hat" hacker. Which means he hacks things and than shows them whats wrong with their software allowing them to fix it. I believe these "white-hat" hackers are good for companies and in most cases the companies offer them a job because of it. For instance the guy who came up with the easiest jailbreak ever for your iDevices, jailbreakme.com was hired by apple I believe.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading thru a few of the comments I am kind of agreeing with Kendrick in the sense that because of what Miller showed that it does make us feel more vulnerable to attacks! Which is a big reminder to log out of important accounts and don't have saved passwords. If someone were to hack into my computer they wouldn't need any of my passwords because they are all damn near saved to windows. Probably a bad idea now that you hear about all of this hacking and what their really capable of!
I read the article on hackers in Apple.
ReplyDeleteThe way hackers can get around computers and basically any other piece of technology is getting ridiculous. They can hack into phones, touch pads, cash registers that are based online, basically anything that has internet.
In this article, hackers are now starting to make Apps for Apple products that will be able to steal all of the persons information if downloaded, this is scary to think about because the average joe will see an application and download it if it appeals to them, not knowing what company it is from or who made it, then they get hacked instantly.
I read the article entitled "Estonians, Russian charged in Internet ad scam". The article was about a group of 6 estonians and a russian who infected over 4 million computers in over 100 countries with malware. They managed to steal around 14 million dollars. The estonians were caught but the russian remains at large. The criminals will receive 5 to 30 years of jail time.
ReplyDeleteSome hackers in Belgium stole some stuff from some computers using a virus. The governments top men are working to figure out what the hell is up with this malware. Some computer wizzes figure the virus is at some online server deal. These smart people then told the online server people that their server had some virus stuff. When the online server people were told about their virus they were like; wtf this sucks. After they were done being shocked the online server folk shut their shit down to stop the virus. Some idiot at some place discovered the problem be he was just like "this looks fishy" so now everyone hates him.

ReplyDeleteI read the article "Will Anonymous Target Facebook on Nov. 5?"
The article was about a hacking group called Anonymous. They are very smart and might take down the social networking of facebook."The good news -- for Facebook fans -- is that the group frequently uses threats and warnings as a way to get people thinking about their targets without actually diving in. "
This group wants to try hack more public pages.
"Microsoft software bug linked to "Duqu" virus"
ReplyDeleteHacking is a major part of the technological world today. With the new advances in technology and computers, hackers are finded easier and more efficient ways to hack into a system. My article is about an unknown bug in the Windows operating stystem called the Duqu virus, which experts say could be the next big cyber threat. They say it contains codes similar to Stuxnet, a piece of software believed to have wrecked Iran's nuclear program. They are trying crack the codes of Duqu because this could help uncrack other viruses that have happened on power plants, oil refineries, and pipelines. They say the hackers targeted victimes with emails with infected Microsoft Word documents attached. If opened the virus could go into the computer and infect the whole network.
Symantec, a computer sales company, is arguably becoming more successful because of computer hacking. As hacking becomes more known, there is a greater demand for computer software. Currently there has been a 34 percent increase in profit because of this demand. If the awareness for the need for protection against computer hackers increases, Symantec's profits will grow immensely as the years progress.
ReplyDeletePalestinians say hackers hit Internet services
ReplyDeletePeople in Palestine have had their internet hacked. This has slowed down the internet and shared information with hackers. They are kind of rattled about this and suspect is was a foreign government.People in this region of the world have had conflict amongst one another. I am sure that some of the people in this region use the internet to arrange the trades for nuclear weapon supplies and what not. If people in Palestine do not have internet it is good because if it keeps the terrorist organizations from contacting each other it has done some good actually. Until the people of this region establish some credibility as a whole they should not have internet, good job hackers!
This article is about a man in China trying to steal intellectual property from major companies in order to gain a competitive edge. Symantex, a US Internet security firm, recently exposed a cyber spying campaign targeting trade secrets at top chemical firms. After doing some investigating, the man behind the spying operations was linked to China. According to Symantec, major chemical firms in the U.S., Britain, and Bangladesh were getting attacked by cyber spies. The virus was named NITRO and they did it by attaching viruses to emails that would infect the receiving computer once opened. The virus would be a software designed to steal information.
ReplyDeleteWill Anonymous Target Facebook on Nov. 5?
ReplyDeleteIn this article hackers are said to be going to hack the facebook server. The article said that the antonymous group would be smart enough to do it, just for the fact that they have hack the government and several other places that have high security. People are starting to wonder because there has been talk that they will try to hack the facebook server on Nov. 5. So will they no one knows entirely yet according to the government these guys have a little way of letting people know if they are going to hack or not just by sending little item that if you know what to look for you will be warned.
http://news.yahoo.com/malicious-hackers-target-twilight-fans-044800866.html
ReplyDeleteThis is about hackers taking advantage of the mass of Twilight Saga fans. They are poisoning links related to Twilight in searches with inappropriate pictures.
I read the article about the top 25 passwords that are recognized by computer hackers. Within the article it mentioned that thousands of people continually use the password "password" even though they are told time after time to choose a password that is over eight characters long, not obvious, and if it is short to separate parts of it with underscores or dashes. Some of the passwords on the 25 worst list were "12345678", "qwerty", "passw0rd", and even passwords that are common names like "Shelby" and "Michael" don't fly under the radar either. Hackers break into thousands of sites and such just by continually trying the top 25 passwords.
ReplyDeleteI read Karly's article about the Symantec computer software that has been increasing its profit by nearly 34 percent due to the demand for their software for protection of hackers and viruses. I think this is pretty cool how good things can come out of such terrible things. It still scares me because I know that one day someone will come up with a way to get pass that software, but it just gives the writers of the software a new challenge!
I feel it's amazing how people can find way's to get into companies files or other peoples. It's not very nice to do but i do feel it fascinating on what hackers can do these days. They can change so many different things like bank account or bank numbers and get money, steal files from companies or like other people can hack, access peoples phones and get everything off of it.

The article I chose was on how Cyber Attacks could wreck world oil supply. The article is basically about how hackers could potentially ruin the oil supply for the world. For how much things is ran off of technology these days, anything that has to do with hacking could potentially ruin anything. Especially oil being such a big deal, this could really mess up a lot of things, such as the already failing economy.
