The year winding down to an end "Top 10" lists continue to pile up reviewing what was hot and what was not for 2011. Yahoo made a bunch of top 10 lists to recap the highlights and lowlights of the year. Pick 2 things off those lists and briefly explain how you think they affected society. Then pick on topic and explain how you could relate that topic to technology. BE CREATIVE!
http://yearinreview.yahoo.com/
I will start with the Iphone being the most searched because this is a technology class. The iphone has obviously been a big deal in the tech world and is pretty sweet thing. More and more people have them and the ability to do things on them is always improving. The second i will go with Obama being killed. I am sure people all over were searching the net to find articles videos or whatever they could find to hear about it. I am going to relate Kim Kardashian because she has twitter and is always is the news for her "merriage" or w.e you would call that.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say the iPhone is the best. Everybody wants it because of it's endless things it can do. Then I would have to say that Kim Kardashian is next because of her marriage she had and everybody that makes jokes about it, which by the way are funny :). Most of the jokes I see are online and have funny pictures to go along with the joke.
ReplyDeleteI won't lie I was a little emotional watching the Inspiring Moments of 2011 video! It is amazing to watch how from all the disasters that occured around the world this year how people came together to help one another. The first story I picked off the lists had to do with the unemployment that hit the U.S. Obviously this had a HUGE impact on our society and economy. The iphone was also something that greatly impacted our society. Who knew a phone or any device could be capable of so much and the idea that just anyone can obtain that device is pretty crazy and shows how far technology has come throughout the years. I also read about the Borders store closing and I think this can be related to technology by the fact that it seems more and more people read their books through kindles or other forms of technology rather that an actual paperback. Technology has made reading a book simpler and more convienent. Instead of carrying around piles of books you can just have them all downloaded on a kindle, makes things a lot easier!
ReplyDeleteTai meant to say OSAMA not OBAMA!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe two topics on the lists that I found the most being related to technology would be the topic on the iPhone along with Steve Job's late passing, and how much the device grew within just the few years. Also with the way that social sites have become thee "thing" to have, and how basically over half of our population has their own site and operate on it daily is pretty crazy to think about. Overall, the year 2011 was a year where technology has started to take over the world. Yet again.
The most searched thing was the Iphone which was a big deal this year because it is a very cool technologically advanced device and it has improved the phone industry and peoples lives. Another big thing in the year was the Japanese earthquake that caused damage to many industries. For example the earthquakes messed up the nuclear plants systems (technology) and caused world panic about how this could effect the world as a whole. The year was crazy one and had many things going on throughout the months.
ReplyDeleteThere were a lot of things on these lists that could relate to technology. First, and most obvious is the fact that the iphone was the most searched item in 2011. No surprise there, with new versions and colors being released, everyone wanted one! Who knew the phone could do so much! And with Steve Jobs first stepping down as CEO (as many were and still are concerned about how this will affect Apple) and then passing away, the internet and Facebook made it possible for thousands if not millions to share their condolences to Jobs.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Borders has closed is sad, and that is clearly because of technological advancements. Books can now be purchased on electronic devices, so there is less of a need for a bookstore. Now if only textbooks were available like this so we could lighten our backpacks....
I would have to go with the iPhone as the best of the year. A lot of people want it because of it's endless capeablities. After that I'd have to go with Kim Kardashian next because of her marriage she had quite a few people make jokes about it, which by the way werent to bad if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteI think that the end of the shuttle has really changed our world. Not in the way that most people would notice. But as space travel turns more to a commercial enterprise it becomes cheaper and more accessible to the public. This could mean huge changes for everyone.
ReplyDeleteSince most of the other things on the lists I did not find all that interesting I would simple like to say that Charlie Sheen rocks.
Charlie Sheen really has effected society everyone knows his sayings, and who he is. He really went out on a limb with the crazy and it has paid off for him.
I honesty think that its sad he has become a hero to some people. But to each his own I guess.
And Obama was killed ?

ReplyDeleteI think the two things that affected society was the new iphone 4S and the Japan Eathquake. The iphone 4S seems to be a big hit because it is an advance into technology. However, the Japan eathquake not only seemed to affect Japan, it had an effect on the whole world. It knocked over nuclear reactors cause nuclear spills all over and leaking into the water. The iphone seems to deal with technology as people are always wanting the new and lastest in technology these days.
ReplyDeleteAustin Whitney being able to walk with the exoskeleton was amazing and the best story..I didnt read or hear about that this year.
ReplyDelete"In 2011, the United States had the most extreme tornado season of all time, one of the worst droughts since the dust bowl days, severe flooding, record-shattering heat, and several tough storms that hit the East Coast." Obviously that affected society the most. All i heard about on the news was the crazy weather...even Minot was on CNN about the extreme flooding and ND was never on the news before the oil boom. I can relate the Casey Anthony trial to technology because if we didnt have the internet or tv..most people wouldnt have known who she was...but since that is all that was talked about on every news website and channel she was the top searched person.
I think that the best is the iPhone also. It really was a thing that changed society's outlook on technology and new possibilities.
ReplyDeleteThe top searched list has that Casey Anthony is number two, that doesn't surprise me. But the fact that she gets so much money to appear on TV shows sickens me. What message are we sending to people who are possible murderers since that is the only reason people know her name. The story of Casey Anthony had a whole country outraged and speechless when she walked out of the courtroom with minor charges. One positive thing that came out of the case is that there is a new law coming into effect called Caylee's law, which requires parents to report missing children within a certain time frame. The most ridiculous is Kim Kardashian, the fact that she is even in the news for no special reason. She made the news with her 72 day marriage/publicity. Society is starting to watch these pointless things more and more.
The iPhone has greatly impacted society and I was not surprised when it was the most searched term. With Steve Jobs retiring and then dying Apple has had a lot of extra attention this year along with the new technology, ex. iPhone and iPad 2 among other things. I was surprised that Casey Anthony was #2 though because she was all over the news so why would people need to look her up? I still believe that that trial did not need to become that popular in the news. I would have thought that Bin Laden's death would have been farther up on the list because when the President announced it many people didn't hear about it until the next morning and with his death many rumors were started and people would turn to the internet to try and decipher those rumors. I think that the internet is a good and bad source for deciding if rumors are true or not. some sources are reliable but then some are not and the forwarded emails are always hard for me to tell if they are true or not.
ReplyDeleteOkay, of the top 10 lists I was caught by the searches list - iPhone as the top search wasn't surprising but I was blown away by Casey Anothony as number 2. The rest of the list was fleshed out by celebrities, and all I can say is hopefully 2011 is one very closer to the end of the Kim Kardashian era. I really despise the sickening obsession people have with celebrity in our county. Their success is so fabricated and fake and everyone falls for it. Exhibit A: Kim Kardashians 'marriage' to Chris Humphries. Really? Really. Not a total publicity scheme or anything. For further reasoning please see:

Now back to iPhone things! I sit on the edge of my seat waiting for the release of Apple products, however 2011's long awaited release of the over-hyped iPhone 4S proved to be a major disappointment. No 4G, no major hardware makeover. A glorified software update complete with ad campaign, if you ask me.
While I understand there are larger-scale (and more important) things that happened in 2011, one of the biggest for me was the end of Harry Potter. Before I get all sappy - never mind it's totally going to get all kinds of sappy up in here. I grew up with the series and the movies were an incredible addition to the story. I really feel this sense of ownership over those books and the movies, and I feel like theres this relationship I have with those characters. Seeing it all come to a close was really heartbreaking.
How this related to technology? INFINITE WAYS.
The film series spans over a ten year period (an eon in the world of technology) The special effects and the cinematography, the music - everything in the films was affected by technological advancements.
J.K. Rowling also introduced her new website 'Pottermore' which is an online reading experience which serves as a supplement to the books, acting also as a sort of social network for Potter fans.
In short - I will miss parts of 2011 and I will miss Harry Potter forever.
I would have to pick the Iphone, because it is like a mini computer. The Iphone was one of the bigger technology advancements I believe because the Iphone puts everything in one. The second one I would have to pick the Japan Earthquake, because this could have caused way more problems than it did. I think it is crazy how many people that it affected and it wasn't just the ones in Japan.
ReplyDeleteTwo topics that affected society: Royal Wedding and Death of Osama Bin Laden
ReplyDeleteThe royal wedding was a “big thing” this past year, as that was all you ever heard about for months. I personally did not watch it or really care about it because I don’t think it was much more “worthy” of attention than any other wedding. But, people everywhere woke up at 3 am to watch this wedding happen. It was beautiful and elegant. The news was filled with all the snidbits of information about the wedding. Even selling decorations so you could have a royal party for friends and everything was just obsessive over this wedding for months.
The death of Osama Bin Laden was also something that impacted our society greatly. The fatal attacked he commanded on to the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, was a travesty and four months short of the ten years anniversary, he received his punishment, and was killed. This is something that has been greatly affecting our society since the day of September 11 and will never be forgotten but we have justice now.
The one topic that I think relates to technology is the Casey Anthony Trial.
This is something that everyone was interested in for the longest time. In December of 2008, the body of 2 year old Caylee Anthony was found. The suspicion arose and everything pointed to towards Caylee’s mother Casey. The media covered the story and trial as well. And so on, you all know the story… but if it wasn’t for technology this case would not have been known by everyone around, magazines, television, and the newspapers covered this story will countless updates and information on the case.
The one that interest me the most is the atlantis last voyage after a long but record breaking and history setting era, although the space craft might be used as parts for a space station which i think it should be a historic artifact but all and all it was great to see. And my favorite Steve Jobs a pioneer, that changed everything technology now and years to come.
ReplyDeleteHaaahaaa! I chose the top ten worst trends of 2011. The two that stuck out to me was the spider eyelashes and the ummmm P90X workout. P90X was a big deal! I never knew exactly what it was, but now I see that it's a really rigorous workout course. Weight loss things will always be big in the society...everybody's so concerned with their appearance. But anyways, it said it's very intense without a trainer. Maybe in the future, we can have virtual trainers. Know what I mean? Like a hologram trainer? But ummm now we have XBox kinect that you can workout with which tells you when you're doing something wrong and stuff, so that's cool. People also just use their wii as like a free personal trainer.
ReplyDeleteEyelashes have had a hugeeee impact on women in society. Eyelashes are a huge part of a woman's face, you know. Now they have fake eyelashes you can get applied, you can dye your eyelashes to make them stand out, and they've even invented mascara tht will thicken your eyelashes. With the spider eyelashes one, it was saying how it takes twice as long to take it off as it does to put it on. In the future, we should create a machine that does your mascara for you, and takes it off for you too VERY QUICKLY. I can spend like 20 minutes putting on mascara sometimes, and I use sooooo many makeup removing wipes to take it off. There's gotta be an invention to help with that!
I chose the worst trends for the year 2011. I think the worst ones that were on the list were P90X, we used to have to do this workout in our p.e. class and it sucked so bad i felt like i was going to fall over everyday and the next day i was so sore, this isnt cut out for everyday people who arent used to doing that much workout in one hour, The next thing that caught my eye was the feathers everyone is wearing them old, young, big, small, little, short, big, and tall, and i think they are the most ridiculous thing ever, i would never wear them in my hear, but each to their own and if you like them and wear them go for it, they just arent for me. Maybe some of these "worst trends" will be better trends in 2012.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that I chose was the Casey Anthony trial. Everyone was shocked when she was found innocent including me. There was so much evidence pointing to her being guilty and there were so many people upset about her being innocent. The other thing that affected society was the iPhone. I became available and cheaper so that now everyone can have them. The topic that I chose to relate to technology is Lindsey Lohan. The media can not get enough of her and it has affected her life tremendously. If people didn't make such a big deal about every little thing that celebrities do maybe they would get bored with trying to get attention in a bad way. Media should focus on the good things that celebrities do and the good things only.
ReplyDeleteThe first story I want to discuss is the Casey Anthony trials. It was a major story in the US and in many other countries as well. It was the number one tolp story on yahoos top 10 Top News Stories. I think it had a huge affect on society in the means that the world was screaming NO! when Casey Anthony got away with murdering her child. Whether it was an accident or not, she tried to hide it and she got away with it. I thought it should how much the government court systems differ. It should have been obvious that she was guilty. But we have made the US government court systems to protect the guilty and punish the innocent.
ReplyDeleteThe second story is number four on the end of an era. Harry Potter was and is a HUGE thing! Many people in my generation grew up reading the books and watching the movies. Now the last Harry Potter movie has been made and it feels to me that it means the end of my childhood. Time to put childish things away and hit the heavy duty school books.
A technology related topic I want to discuss is number three on the top 10 top news stories. The Royal Wedding. Thanks to technology every single person on the planet got to feel like they were invited. Whether good or bad is be individually decided but no one can deny the fact that technology helped the whole world experience it.
I chose that video inspiring moments was the most influential and inspiring! Paraplegic Austin Whitney walks at his college graduation with the help of an exoskeleton. This is the most amazing thing ever. Imagine that someone who has been immobile for years can suddenly walk. I also chose Volunteers at Kobuchihama, Oshika Peninsula, Miyagi prefecture. The picture is quite inspiring with all the people picking up trash along side of the road. These two events affected society hopefully by inspiring everyone!!!! The exoskeleton is technology itself that could change so much, and the volunteers help by picking up trash that could hurt the environment.
ReplyDeleteI think that the show Extreme Couponing is an awesome idea. Some of the ladies on the show go a little over board though. But the general idea of the show is to share how some people actually save money. Most on the show either are having a time of low income or have went through a time when their income was scarce. I think for society to see that these women and some men have found a way to save this much money through the bad economy is inspirational.
ReplyDeleteKim Kardashian's wedding event was another big thing that effected society. Personally I did watch the wedding event on E and thought that it was awesome. But honestly who gets married for 72 days or however long it was? They were together before they were married for much longer than that and should have known that they were not right for each other. To me that just tells society "Hey look I just made this many million off of my wedding. Thanks for watching it!" Basically it was just a matter of making some money off of it and not for the sake of love.
Well I guess planking is the new "thing to do". Or maybe the new thing to watch on youtube. So I guess this relates to technology because without technology planking would never have been shared with so many others.
I think that the iPhone has impacted our society a lot throughout the year 2011. The iPhone has become a huge thing this year. You can pretty much do anything with your iPhone, and you can also get so many different apps with it. I think the iPhone is a pretty sweet advancement in technology.
ReplyDeleteThe next one I would pick would be the royal wedding. It was a huge deal in England, and we also heard about it for months before and after it happened. I know of people who woke up in the wee hours of the morning just to watch the wedding. Even if you didn't care about it, you still knew every little detail about it.
The death of Osama Bin Laden was a huge turning point in history. Finally finding him, I think, put an end to some people's worries and pride was restored in fellow Americans. The next topic I chose was Charlie Sheen. The controversy he caused sparked something in a lot of people, the well known phrase "winning" is used all over the globe. There are even movies using this saying and people commonly express it. Angry birds is one of the most popular apps in the world today. I think because of its popularity, more people wanted to explore the app world and this strongly affected technology.
ReplyDeletethe first thing i picked was the worst trends of 2011. i found it funny that people actually follow these ridiculous trends just because some stupid celibrity decides to do it. why would i care what a stuckup millionaire actress is wearing unless its nothing. the next thing i picked was the iphone i have one. i love it. it makes my life way easier end of story... i waltch the most astounding moments video and one of the things on it that related to technology was the new hubble telescope that viewed a nebular that was millions of lightyears away. it was pretty neat.
ReplyDeleteThis year marked an ending of an era for Harry Potter and Oprah. Oprah had provided people with quality entertainment for many year. A lot of the money she makes is donated back to charity and things of that sort. Many feel as if this can't be the end for this amazing lady. This year also marked the end for Harry Potter and this comes as a sigh of relief for me. I gave him an honesty try but I found the series to be brutal. I am more of a Lord of the Rings guy. Also, I saw in a British tabloid magazine that the goof that plays the part of Harry is a binge drinker. Just whenever I look at the guy all I can think of is how much I hate that little puke.
ReplyDeleteFrom the top ten news stories of the year I think the Japan earthquake and tsunami and the occupy Wall Street movement affected society the most. The Japan eathquake affected society on a global scale, while Occupy Wall Street affected society on a national scale. It seems like whenever there is a natural disaster the entire world comes together to help whatever nation is in need. This tightens the bond between countries across the world resulting in an overall betterment of society. Occupy Wall Street affected society by simply pointing out the problem in the global distribution of wealth. About 1% of the population owns 40% of the global weath. I think that the Japan earthquake and tsunami affected technology because Japan is a major contributor to technological advancements and it's kind of difficult to produce new technologies when you're being destroyed by an earthquake/tsunami.
ReplyDeleteFor this assignment I picked the 10 most inspiring moments of 2011. When the earthquake struck Japan, there was so much devistation and harm that was done to so many people. A lot of people were killed and affected by it. I love to hear about all of the relief efforts and volunteer work that is being done to help the people in need. I also like the story of finding that infant baby alive in the rubble and saving her from dying. I think that is an amazing miracle that needs to be remembered.
ReplyDeleteThe second story I thought was great was the one aboutthe labrador retriever who layed by the casket at his owner's funeral. After I read that article, it was hard for me not to cry because it really touched my heart. It is hard to believe that that dog had an awareness to know what was going on.
Anther article was about Paraplegic Austin Whitney who walked at his college graduation with the help of an exoskelton. This has to do with technology becuase it focuses on the advancements of medical technology and how inovative it is becoming.
I'm always grossly disturbed by the 10 most searched terms in every year. I'm glad that the number 1 spot was a technology and not a person. As much as I dislike Steve Jobs, the iPhone is pretty brilliant, especially the 4S (Which I can say with confidence since I now own one.)
ReplyDeleteI am severely disappointed that the rest of the top ten searches are people. The internet has really opened up a whole new window for voyeurism. From online celebrity gossip to Facebook with your friends, our lives have become about watching the lives of others. No wonder 90% of my college friends can't decide on a major or be happy with who they are. They all want to be someone else.
I watched the video of the most astounding things of 2011, and I thought it was incredible about the boy who was paralyzed and actually got up and walked at his graduation. I thought that was truly inspiring and it was really uplifting. He had the help of a mechanical exoskeleton, which just goes to show how much technology has advanced in the medical field.
ReplyDeleteAlso, another part I found incredible, was the fact that the Representative of Arizona, Gabrielle Giffords actually survived a shooting at a rally in Tucson in January. Now, she is up and walking again. It's just incredible the advances in the medical field can actually have someone up and walking after something like that happening.
I was disappointed to see the Top Ten Searches because they were nearly all focused on our country. I think most everyone would agree that a nearly everyone on the list has not contributed something of lasting value to our society besides entertainment. The earthquake and tsunamis in Japan caused unfathomable damage and I thought the economic disruption could have potentially caused issues within our economy. Osama bin Laden finally being killed has greatly effected our society because I think it was a check mark on the to-do list before bringing our troops home. Having our troops home creates happier families and children that can sleep better at night knowing their mom or dad is home safe. As a society though, the Top 10 Searches proves how little we worry about leaving this country better for our children, as we are more concerned with instant gratification. Maybe I am a little too pessimistic but when we worry about attractive celebrities more than our own nation's economy I think we may be off base.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the story about the student with the working exo-skeleton and it has a direct link with technology. I am excited at the possibility of helping those who are disabled or injured in war walk again. The technology in prosthetic devices to know where you are in your stride and adjust is amazing. I am proud that we are supplying our troops with this technology after they placed their lives on the line for our freedoms.
I would have to pick the I phone. Because it is like computer. The I phone was one of the bigger technology advancements. Because the I phone puts everything in one. The second one I would have to pick is the Japan Earthquake. Because this could have caused more problems. I fell it is crazy how many people were affected and it wasn't just the ones in Japan.
ReplyDeleteLaShane K. Wobbema
I think the two things that affected society the most were the iPhone 4S and the Japan Eathquake. The iphone 4S was a huge deal because it is a huge advance for apple. The iPhone 4 was a great cool phone but with it able to do all the multitasking they enabled it to do it ended up not being quite as fast as we all hoped. Now Apple has came out with an iPhone 4s it has theoretically twice the speed as the previous version had.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the earthquake in Japan not only seemed to affect Japan, it had a devastating tragedy on the whole world.
