Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel?
This is something your parents and driver ed teachers have been telling you for years but are you really taking their advice? Read the following article about how car manufacturers are trying to keep up with the latest trends in technology. Do you you think this is a good idea? What are some of the pros and cons to their new ideas and integrated car technology? What does your vehicle currently have factory installed and what other technology do you regularly use that is not "part" of your car?
I do not think that this is a good idea. It is going to cause more distractions for people on the road and will cause more accidients rather than helpin us. people will be looking through their music on their car or trying to get a destination set up while driving.
ReplyDeleteThe only technology that i do not have in my car that i use alot, is the internet. other than that i have my music and phone with me. ya it's nice that your able to put music in your car and have it stashed there, but then people will be more worried about their music rather than watching the road. i have a hard time doing this with my ipod, now imagine having it built into your car.
the nice thing about having a GPS system and music put in it, is that you do not have to have a million loose wires in your vehicle while driving down the road to get caught on. the pros of it is no wires to worry about and no more having to remember the extra items you need for your drive or trip
Keeping technology in vehicles is important in consumer ratings which keeps the company, like Ford, GMC, or whatever alive. But, if in the wrong hands can be very dangerous to other and themselves as well. If the driver is too distracted by the vehicle reading texts and flipping through music, gps, conversations and IPads, then the driver can become a risk. It makes life easier and faster but can still be risky. My vehicle is a 2005, it has OnStar and some things that tell me temperature and what not, but other than that I just have my CD player as non-factory installment.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion:
ReplyDeleteI think that it is important for the car makers to keep up with the newest technology. For their sales and for the modern worlds sake as well. People always want to be connected, be it through facebook, twitter or whatever their social medium of choice is. So car makers and literally other service in the world has to mold to fit this new techy form.
I think there are many pros and cons alike.
Pros are cars are getting more friendly and safer to drive, cutting down on the distractions that phones and ipod offer by making there use more stream line.Services such as speech to text and the revert offer the used the ability to stay in contact while cutting down on the distraction required to text on the go. There are of course others cons, some of the apps suggested to car makers are very unsafe, such as one that displays a HUD (heads up display ) With a video chat app? ?
I always question who thought that this would be a good idea ?
But all in all i think this push forward to make your driving experience a more relaxing, more connected and safer ordeal are all good.
I really wish my car had some of the features now coming out in the forms of gps and apps. Though my car does have a nice stereo that is about it. Though my smart phone does make up for all the features my car didn't come stock with.

At first glance this seems like a great idea. I would love to be able to surf through internet radio using the controls on my steering wheel; but let's take a step back and look at the overall picture. When you're in the car shouldn't you be fully (or at least mostly) focused on driving? Do we really need to turn our vehicles into "roving hot spots"? With DVD's playing in the back for the kids, ipad docking stations, internet access and more, this creates quite the technology bombardment. And with that, you will NEVER be able to get away from work. Your boss won't believe that you never recieved the e-mail. In my opinion, I feel like once you're in the car you should be focused on driving and not staying connected with your social media and whatnot.
ReplyDeleteMy car has a place for my ipod to plug in so I use that and a GPS that is not part of the vehicle. That's it. Lame, I know.

I think that the technology that is being added to cars can be absolutely unnecessary and just adding to the cost of vehicles. I think it's a little bit ridiculous that car companies feel the pressure to keep up with the technology trends. They should focus their attention more on the safety and quality of the car. There is no need for vehicles to have the apps that cell phones have. I understand the need for GPS systems and things like that but the after market systems are a lot cheaper and more convenient. My vehicle has a lot of new technology and honestly I couldn't even tell you all of the things it has. It has a backup camera though and even though I use it, it didn't influence my purchase. Other than that I'm not even sure on how to use or what other technologies it has and I guess I'm not really interested.

I think car technology is getting a little over the top. To be putting this in the cars i think it will have just about as much distraction as having it on your cell phone. My car being a 2011 has more of the updates, i have never really explored into what kind of things it can access. The only thing i have noticed is the OnStar, which i have never used but is there for wheneever it is needed.
ReplyDeleteThey have some pretty cool ideas. However, I am a poor indian and can't afford a new car. My car is 97 and has none of these new features. Onstar I am sure is handy but is for people who are rich and can't change tires. The only time I use my smartphone in my car is when I play pandora through my radio. The coolest thing is being able to unlock your car with your iphone. People lock their keys in the car all the time but no one goes anywhere without their cell phone.
ReplyDeleteI do not belive thisis a good idea becuase this will cause more distractions. I feel this will increase car accidents for the small fact that people will always being messing with the technology. I have no current technology in my car and do not use any technology while I am driving. I may not have any newer technology in my car but my family does own a pickup that have onstar. I feel this device is nice but always scary at the same time. It is nice being able to call onstar to unlock your car but it is also scare that they can tell you exactually where you are driving.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good idea, but also a bad one. It's good so you have everything in your vehicle if you need it,and not having to look down at your cellphone when someone's calling or texting would be easier, but all of the things they're planning to put in the vehicle will also be just too much of a distraction while you're driving. I don't think people really need to go on facebook or anything like that when driving... that's pointless..wait until you get home. I have a 2009 and I have no idea what technology my vehicle has, I don't really pay attention to things like that.
ReplyDeleteI can only think about how far the whole tech-car integration can go. One of the biggest problems (mentioned in the article) is that manufacturing a car takes far more time than it take to release new technology. Another problem I find is that cars with new tech features aren't ever consistent across the board. GM and Ford and BMW are all using different systems in their vehicles...it's like bringing 7 different operating systems into the mix.
ReplyDeleteOutside of DVD players for passengers (genius) I find all of this technology to be a burden. I already use my phone for everything. Free navigation? Check. Pandora Internet radio? Check. All the apps I'll never need while driving a freaking CAR? Check. (Frankly, the fact that General Motors or Ford would find it necessary to have their own App market blows me away.)
Maybe it's because I have bare-bones old school tech in my car. I plug my iPhone into a tape deck. A tape deck. Read that again.
A tape deck.
When I'm not using that, I listen to this thing called the radio, and if I need to find out how to get somewhere I pull up Google Maps. If I lost my keys and needed to get into my car, then maybe using an app to unlock would be great. Otherwise, it seems excessive. Moving forward? Yes. Moving forward for the sake of moving forward? Double yes.
With all this new technology coming out I do think a lot of it is a good idea. Being able to hook up your cell phone and playing your own music and having access to apps will be a big hit. With some of the apps like read out loud text it will help prevent a lot of texting and driving that leads to accidents. Also, I think having onstar in a vehicle is a positive thing. However, with more buttons on the steering wheel to access the controls to control it might cause more drivers to be distracted with figuring out what button does what and cause them to be distracted.
ReplyDeleteCurrently, my vehicle does not have any of this technology, it simply just has a cd player. I reguarly use my smart phone for a gps when I am on the road. That comes in handly in so many ways.
- Jennifer Johnson
I dont think it is a good idea just because it can cause more distraction and drivers today are already distracted enough with everyday life. These cars that just add more for people to do, rather than just drive is very unsafe. Some pros are that is will keep you up to date all the time but it will also distract you and cause unsafe roads. You will be more intune with what Nancy posted on facebook rather than the bright brake lights infront of you as you rear-end the car infront. I drive a 1980 truck so I barely have a stero system but I use my Iphone and music all the time but I dont when Im driving because that is super dangerous and I dont want to rear-end anyone. So personally I dont need those high tech things in my car but if i were to have them i would possibly use them but i dont need them to drive.
ReplyDelete-Kyler Eubank
I think that some of the features could be a good idea, but a lot of it is unnecessary. The unlocking of your car by phone for example, it could be handy if you locked your keys in the car, but what if someone takes your phone? Also, the Pandora music would be a good idea I think because people like their own kind of music. My car is an '03 so it doesn't have any of this new technology in it, but my parent's new car does and from trying the voice activated hands free calling it could use some more work. OnStar is a great idea for calling for help in an accident, but do you really need it looking up stuff on the internet for you? And people are already to dependent on Facebook I don't think it needs to be in the car! All of the extra stuff they are talking about being behind in is it really necessary stuff to even have it in your car? It will create even more ways than just texting and driving to get in an accident, then the government will just make more rules and we have enough of them already! The basics would be great, directions, calling for help, and music on the long trips, but the rest is just an accident waiting to happen.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion on this is that its not a good idea just because their are to many distractions for people as it is. such as face-book and twitter and so many more things just by your cell phone its not just the phone calls and other things. but i do think like ford and GMC should keep up with technology for the safety fact. but even with it be safe it still is a distraction and still be risk to the other drivers.

ReplyDeleteI personally believe that is crucial as well as vital that cars keep up up with the latest technology. To make sure we are able to keep up with this fast on the go way of living, the safest way possible.
ReplyDeleteWhich brings me to what i believe to be the pros of the innovative car technology that is being added regularly; the safety aspect which is extremely important. Drivers no longer need to hold cellphones while they are in voice conversations, leaving their hands free for efficient driving. Another pro would be all of the voice activated devices in the car dashboard that are now available to the new age driver, which i see as something so convenient.
On the other hand when looking at cons, you may bump into minor problems that might be hard to avoid. with all these new gadgets and what not you face the risk of distracting the driver and taking some if not most of their attention of the road, where it needs to be.
Other than that i intend on welcoming this technology with open arms, even though I myself do not own a car i'm definitely excited to see more interesting inventions to add on to the entire driving experience.
Technology Is growing faster than our goverment .... Keeping up with technology is nice but Is it worth getting in a car wreck to see who plays your favorite song.. in my opinion its not. I belive all the new technology being put into cars are ridiculous and unnecissary. It is cool to keep up with the new generation but do you really need to be able to check your facebook at every moment of the day. I think putting all of this energy into something so luxurios is ridiculos and stupid we should be putting all of this creative energy into something more useful. Music is nice to have in a car but, How many people do you think die a day because they wanted to change a song on thier IPOD.... It's just sad how much energy we put into stuff that really doesnt matter. I can understand GPS'S can help you get where you need to be and its alot easier to look and than a map but atleast when you are lookin at a map most people pull over instead of watching a little screen going sixty miles an hour while other cars wiz by you and the chance of you slightly going the direction that your looking is extreamly likely. So as it is an easier way to live its also very risky. People get distracted way to easyly much less having a milliond gadgits goin on while your tryin to get home in one peice.
ReplyDeleteI love technology! When it comes to bringing it into vehicles i'm all for it! Some of the things that they are coming out with can be very distracting, when it requires someone to operate it physically rather than through audio. Some of the things that are being implemented into the vehicle world that are based on voice commands will allow you to keep your eyes on the road rather than staring down at your smartphone texting away. While others require you to push buttons and give up your concentration on the road. I really like the idea of voice commands! I use my cd player that has multiple discs and xm and an ipod adapter! These all take my eyes off the road! That cant be good. Yet I love all these features.
ReplyDeleteI personally think it's a good idea for other people, I however don't really care about my car being able to post status updates for me, I'm not THAT addicted to Facebook. In my opinion, if you're that addicted that you need to be posting Facebook statuses 24/7, then you have a problem. But that's the problem, there are some people that need to be on Facebook all the time, so at least these features would make them safer drivers.
ReplyDeleteSome of the pros of these features, is that it will make people safer drivers because there hands will be on the wheel more often than not, because they really wouldn't have a reason to take their hands off! However, some of the cons are, is that people won't be able to get away from technology at all, they'll always be on Facebook and posting stuff that no one wants to hear. Such as; "OMG just hit a deer LOL." I've actually had friends post that on Facebook, ridiculous.
My truck doesn't really have a whole lot of technology, however it does have a six changer CD player, which is pretty cool, and it came stock! And something that I use in my truck that is not stock is my FM transmitter, which is something you can buy that will allow you to listen to your iPod over your speakers via radio station. What you do is, you plug one end into your iPod, and the other into your cigarette lighter in your vehicle and it'll transmit signals to an FM channel and play over your speakers, it's pretty neat!
I think that cars trying to keep up with the new technology is a good thing. We now have the option to have a navigation system, cameras, help centers and iPod systems in our vehicles today. These come in very handy when you are traveling and are not sure where you are going. The cons of having all these new options are that people do focus more on those then on actually driving. I think more accidents do occur when people are paying more attention to things like changing the song on their iPod then to the road. My car doesnt have anything fancy in it. No power locks or windows even. I do put an adaptor in my car so I can plug in my iPod but I dont really use it unless my boyfriend is in the car to change the songs so I dont have to mess with it.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is always going to be upcoming, when you think about it you almost have to figure that something like this would come out eventually. After one thing comes out some of the things usually along the same line of manufacture come out soon after just from different companies. Its a competition to see who can see most of the same products for the most part. Smart cars sound like a good thing to have in a way because i could hook my android up to my car and get information and it would also help car accidents from texting and driving and facebooking and driving because you could just say what you wanted to type while watching the road. I have no gps or anything in my car because i can look at it from my smartphone and my gps will tell me where to go.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that car companies realize their expensive technology is inferior to the cheap stuff we can get at best buy. I don't feel like this stuff is real critical to a car. Sure I'd love to have it all because it's kind of cool but I don't need it. I'm not going to pay a bunch of money for my onstar to give me my fb updates. I can simply take my phone out of my pocket and look at it. To me, I'd rather my vehicle look and sound good. When I'm sick of looking and listening to it,I'll check my facebook. All in all, cool go for it but I'm not buying it. When someone hits me with their car because their onstar is glitching out and their pounding on their dash, I'll be quite upset.
ReplyDeleteThese new advances in the car industry may be good for sales but may not be so good for the safety of the driver or drivers on the road. While these new additions may be interesting they will still take a while to get used to for the driver. Do we really want a driver on the road that is trying to get used to their vehicle while they are driving? The voice command texting would be a great thing because then at least your hands would be on the wheel. Although posting on Facebook while driving is going a little far with the ideas.
ReplyDeleteTechnology is very important in today's society. This new addition may sound like a really good idea at the moment, seeing as though you wouldn't have to touch anything to talk or text someone or to choose what music y you'd like to play. But when the wrong person begins to use it, it could be fatal. Although it is hands free, it's still taking the attention of the driver off of the road which is still very risky. Trying to listen to your favorite song could lead to you getting into a serious accident. It's completely unnecessary.

ReplyDeleteI do not think that this is a good idea. People get distracted easily now the way it is without all of these gadgets in the vehicles. People can live without high technology in their vehicles for the time being. Onstar is useful, but some of the other inventions they are coming up with is not needed in vehicles.
The wireless phone in the vehicle is interesting to me. Most newer vehicles have that already. By using the wireless phone both hands and eyes can be on the road. If apps are made possible in vehicles by using a smart phone most people will have to upgrade to a smart phone in order to run these apps. Most people will not be able to afford a vehicle like the one they are describing in the article.
I think that the new car technology is great. I feel people will use phones and technology while driving regardless of safety so they might as well make technology that makes using the devices while driving safer. I just drive my fathers vehicle which is pretty basic, It doesn't have a whole lot of new technology. I usually plug in my ipod to the car stereo and I try to avoid texting and keep my eyes on the road.
ReplyDeleteI think its a great idea to integrate technology into cars because if its integrated its safer than if your using a seperate device. There are safety regulations they have to put in so it makes it less dangerous to drive. it is a distraction but lets get real who doesnt check there phone once in a while when they drive. Or who doesnt switch the song on there ipod when there making a sharp turn. I know I do. My vehicle currently has cruise control, ipod hookup, automatic lights, power windows, push button fourwheel drive. Its basically awesome. Other technology that I use is my cell phone to text, facey, call, maps, and search the web. I also use my ipod to jam out to some good tunes.
ReplyDeleteIts a conspiracy man. I don't agree at all with the technological movement. I think more accidents are bound to happen as technology tightens its deathgrip. My current vehicle is a 2006 honda civic. It's pretty sick. It has a digital odometer and a radio and stuff. The basics. My car is by no means a smart car.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love the idea of owning a brand new, top of the line, super-fancy car with tons of gadgets and bells and whistles, it's so totally an unreachable dream. Car companies are marketing to the upper-middle and lower-high classes of society. This is fine, everyone needs to make a living, make a profit, etc. However, it should not be at the expense of those who just need a set of wheels to get to and from work or take their children to school every day. Those aren't the people longing for the latest integrated technology, they're longing for something affordable and reliable. Hand in hand with rolling out new cars from the line, manufacturers are then forced to discontinue parts for cars already or previously on the market. This forces consumers of necessity to work even harder and go with even less just to afford the same things that the rest of us take for granted.
ReplyDeleteAs far as safety and integration goes, I think that as the industry grows then so will our capacity for learning and functioning with it. I mean, we ARE headed toward the singularity and all, but so far the minds of our youth have been able to adapt and utilize what's come on to the market. However, until those of us in college now are the new upper-middle-class 30-somethings with money to blow (and by blow, I mean manage, since the concept of cash has been made irrelevant in the US) there will be issues of driving and safety when it comes to the integration of technology in cars.
I whole-heartedly believe that this is the time when we need to be asking "How far is too far?" and set a limit of development. Progress solely for the sake of progress is dangerous and unwise. This technology may not pose many problems for now, or even in the near future, but the day will come when it does and we would be foolish to think we can meet it unprepared.
I really disagree with using technology for everything, especially a car. I just feel like it's unreliable. Some pros and cons are that they would hopefully eliminate some distraction from the road, but at the same time I feel that it would also add more distraction than help. I do have On-Star and XM/Sirus in my car. I have other apps I could download but choose not to. I use my I-pod quite regularly and my cell phone. Overall I think that the addition of all these apps will also increase prices of vehicles, and in our economy situation I think that it would not benefit the people who are having problems affording essentials as it is.
ReplyDeleteI think that this smart phone smart car idea is wack. People have enough problems focusing on the road with their phones and ipods and stuff, they dont need all that shit to tie into their cars. Pros are yuppies now can be doing their facebook and shit while not paying attention to the road and running little kids over. The cons are people will get in crashes and people get injured but as long as its just the idiots who buy this stuff i dont mind. My Chevy beastslayer is an 88 so the most technologically advanced that came with it is a dial that increases or decreases the intensity of the lights. I do have a stereo system that was installed in around 04 and it is used to listen to music. All in all its just another conspiracy between the the smart phone companies and the cars. Those bastards are working together to get each other better sales.
ReplyDeleteI think these new innovations are insane. Technology is advancing so rapidly that it almost scares me to see where it will be in a few years. I think the new advancements for vehicles is a great thing in that you can do so many things like social networking and voice command texting. Although these can be very helpful, this only adds to more distractions to the driver. Less attention will be towards the road and more towards the cool new features in ones vehicle. Unfortunately the most technology my car has is a stereo and an ipod transmitter. I constantly use these two features as music always improves a car ride.
ReplyDeleteSmart cars can be very helpful for the average day as well as possibly more safe but there's one thing that makes this advancment still very dangerous, your still driving a vehicle! I admit that the speech-to-text is much safer than picking up your phone and sending a message. Also the surfing radio stations via voice command is safer than playing with buttons but your driving a vehicle first and foremost. Distractions, even the smallest kind can have a huge impact on the road, literally. How many car crashes happen while someone reaches for their phone or reply to a text or finding a radio station? Too many in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI don't try to put off that I'm not affected by technology while I drive. I try to stay away from texting and driving and more or less succeed. I have a casette player to play my ipod and I mess with my ipod often when I drive. I also take phone calls when I'm driving, so using smartphones to connect to the car stereo and voice commanding to text back or change songs would deffinintly be an upgrade in safety.
Overall I think the majority of the technology they are putting into cars is beneficial and will possibly make a positive change in the number of car accidents caused by phones and radios.
I don't think it's a good idea because it takes the drivers attention off the road. even just thinking about what you want to post on Twitter/facebook can cause an accident or a death. I feel a car should be used to drive and listen to music at the most. Any new technology should be in the back seat or on the passenger side to prevent injury. Good things about it is that you can get a lot of things done while you are stuck in traffic and not miss an important email or anything while you are headed somewhere. I will be installing a touch screen deck to my car once i get back home and that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the new technology developed by these car manufacturers is a tremendous break through. If they can take the phone out of a drivers hand and still make it capiable to be controlled by the car's steering wheel it will change how people buy cars and why the buy them. The app developed by "OnStar" is what really intrigued me, having features that read txt messages aloud to drivers and using voice commands to comment on facebook is unreal. This is all great stuff, but there are still some cons to all of this. They believe that with all of this new technology, that people will not be able to handle of the these new features and driving. My vehicle does not have any other feature besides power windows and a cd player that rarely works. The thing I use most while driving is an Ipod, and I only look down to change the song at the appropriate times.
ReplyDeleteI think that the idea of having Facebook and twitter available behind the wheel is terrible. In today's world we are already dealing with drivers texting and driving, so I don't understand why the developers think this is a good idea. Some ideas that I do agree with are the voice control for calling people and working an I-pod as well as on star. My mom's friend has had to use on star twice with her grandson when she accidentally locked him in the car. She called On-Star and they unlocked the doors before he even knew she was gone. As for the voice controls I think this is a great way to allow the drivers to keep their hands on the wheel but still be satisfied :) Facebook and Twitter are just not a good idea to have behind the wheel in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe car industry is always coming out with new technology for their vehicles. Whethere it is OnStar or a touch screen monitor, the manufactors are trying to keep up with the ever-changing technology boom.
ReplyDeleteI think that many of the inovations are a very good idea, such as OnStar. OnStar is great because it does many differnent things that are helpful in today's traveling society. It can send you directions your destination, call someone from inside your car using a hands free device, and send a signal to the nearest emergency hospital in case of an emergency.
However, sometimes I think that the car industry might be going to far on these new installations. I think that with some of them, it might not help the distraction part of drving and it might even increase it. Safety might be an issue if you are using an app because you are still becoming unfocused from the road.
In my car, I have OnStar and I love it. It is very useful when you don't know the directions to where you are going or what a place is. It is also good to know that if I am in a accident, OnStar will be able to call to get help for me.
In this article they talk about on how all these vehicles are starting to put nav and voice activated devices
ReplyDeleteWhat I find interesting is that Ford had took the lead on both nav and sync by Microsoft
i think its a great idea.if it a new i dont want it and the better and faster the car the better they should have like cars that can fly so i wouldnt have to waste my time at the airport.i love touch screen radios there so nice and cars with hemi's in them.the thingi use the most in the car is the radio, ipod you know etc
ReplyDeleteAlthough the advances in technology make everyday tasks easier and more efficient, at some point those features are going to become distracting to drivers. There is some truth in what those drivers ed teachers are telling you. However, at a business and manufacturers point of view, the advances in technology are another form of competition between car companies. The features that are beginning to show up in vehicles are a safer alternative to texting and driving, in theory. The more gadgets there are included inside, the more potential distractions.
ReplyDeleteI am guilty of texting and driving, not to mention all of the other things that I am doing. In my car, a 98 Jeep Cherokee, there is hardly any up-to-date technology. Everything from the engine to the dashboard is stock, in exception to the minor addition I had installed. About 4 years ago when I got my license, I hooked up a CD deck along with wires, an amp and one subwoofer. Although my music is very enjoyable, at times that alone can be a distraction.
Cars and technology plays both sides, good and bad. For car companies having all these new apps and cool ideas to go in a new car is sweet, who wouldn't want that? By law, not so smart. Police, parents, friends, family, everyone is trying to get us young drivers to stay off our phones while operating a motorized vehicle. Its against the law to text and drive or talk on the phone while you are under 18 anyways, so why would it not be against the law to put these in a car to just text and drive also but from you car? Double stander and makes no sense to me. I won't lie, i do tend to text and drive once in a while, or even talk on me phone, its a huge distraction and we're used to it. Having something new and interesting in cars will draw a lot of attention which usually doesn't end good. As for the car dealers, its definitely a way to sell cars, but i wouldn't want to be held accountable for statistics going up in accidents due to my companies new apps and what not. OnStar is very useful, although talking on the phone isn't as risky as playing on an app or texting because you are still focused and looking at whats in front of you. Im not saying i wouldn't buy a car with all these new creations, i probably would. It just doesn't seem all that smart in the end to have all the things on your new smartphones in your car when your car isn't an accessory, its something to get you from a destination to another.
ReplyDeleteFrom a business standpoint, I think innovation is a great idea, but as a driver it seems a little unnecessary. I personally am not a fan of all the technology crammed into cars because most users are not proficient at using it, let alone using it while traveling at 65mph. An idea I believe would be a huge success to safety would be would be limiting speeds at which one can text. Our cell phones are getting smart enough to know how fast we are going and if the ability to send texts locked up at 15 mph, the driver would be forced to put more attention on the road. The phone could also ask if you wanted it to read a received text so you would be able to keep your eyes where they should be. If the driver receives a message that requires an immediate answer, they can pull over and their phone will unlock. I think a complicated pattern would be necessary to unlock the phone for passengers in the vehicle, but overall it could drastically reduce time spent focusing on your phone.
ReplyDeleteI cannot say that I am innocent, to be honest, I text and drive very often. My "smart" phone has an app that translates my text to speech, but it isn't always correct. While trying to fix the incorrect section, I am then texting to fill in the blanks which has basically defeated my attempt to be a more responsible driver.
My truck has zero extra technology, while a GPS would be useful in larger cities, a person doesn't need much help navigating North Dakota. The only extra technology I do use occasionally is Pandora on my phone, which is plugged in via a tape deck, due to our area's lack of radio stations.
While I think technology is good and auto makers need to pursue it, they need to apply the brakes until it is more functional for the average user.
I think its silly that they cant keep up with the teck. But who knows if Z-Day comes about whos going to care about this stuff.
